Neuropsychology is the study of the interplay between brain and behaviour.
When an individual's brain is impacted by illness or injury, particularly early in life, their thinking, behaviour, emotions and overall day-to-day functioning may be impacted.
Clinical Neuropsychologist are Psychologists that undergo further, specialised training to be able to look at a range of cognitive (thinking) skills, such as: overall intelligence; attention and concentration; speed of thinking; learning and memory; visual-spatial and language skills; academic abilities; and executive functioning (i.e., planning, organisation, reasoning, initiating and inhibiting behaviours). They assess the impact of cognition on behaviour, emotion and daily activities.
If you are concerned about your child’s or young person's thinking skills, memory, attention, behaviour or emotions, a neuropsychological assessment may be something to consider. Our Services section has more information on the types of assessments we offer.
iCAN. specialises in the assessment of children and young people who have congenital or acquired neurological conditions (such as a brain injury, neurological disorder, genetic condition, or a complex medical history). However, we are able to provide assessment to any person with a clinical or functional need, irrespective of age or medical history. If iCAN. does not feel they are the most appropriate professional to help, we will provide alternative names.
At iCAN. we aim to address specific concerns by providing a complete picture of a person's cognitive strengths and weaknesses, as well as appropriate strategies (if required) that can be implemented so they can reach their full potential. We also provide ad-hoc consultative services, as required, to assist families in explaining neuropsychological assessment findings to schools, therapists, and other relevant healthcare or NDIS providers.
In general, all assessments include a comprehensive interview with the client and their caregiver to get an idea of their developmental and medical history, as well as the current concerns.
The client will then work 1:1 with the Clinical Neuropsychologist to complete a range of tasks (which may be computer-based and/or pen and paper based). The assessment component can take anywhere between 2 and 4 hours dependent on the referral question and therefore the type of assessment being undertaken (see the Services for more detail).
The client, their caregiver, and other relevant people may be asked to complete some questionnaires.
All assessments include a comprehensive report and a feedback session.
